Professor Tang is an academic, researcher, and tech entrepreneur widely recognized for his expertise in Building Information Modeling (BIM), Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital Twins (DT), and Smart City technologies. He serves as an Associate Professor in Building Information Modeling at The University of Hong Kong (HKU), is the Founder and Group CEO of Llewellyn and Partners Company Limited, and was an Overseas Visiting Fellow at the University of Cambridge on National Digital Twin.
He is a committee member for the Hong Kong SAR Government on ISO/TC 59 (Buildings and civil engineering works) and ISO/TC 59/SC 13 (Organization and digitization of information about buildings and civil engineering works, including BIM), and a member of the BIM Assessment Panel (BIMAP) of CIC. He is also a validation panelist and reviewer for CIDB Malaysia’s “Construction 4.0: A Guide for Digital Transformation” and the author of the Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) publication “BIM Development Roadmap in Developing Economies.”
As an international advocate for BIM-AI R&D Innovation and Information management, and a pioneer in the new normal of construction, he leverages urban and green technologies to drive sustainable development and carbon neutrality. Over the past decades, he has led/participated in various large-scale BIM, AI, and digital twin projects to reshape the world’s largest industry ecosystem. Furthermore, he first introduced the UK BIM Level 2 standard (PAS 1192/ISO 19650) to China, promoting BIM technology integration between East and West (“as-Asia region”) and advancing global digitalization and smart city development. Professor Tang has secured over HKD 120 million in research funding and industry sponsorship, with HKD 60 million as Principal Investigator (PI).
He has delivered more than 100 public speeches internationally on BIM and smart cities, supervised more than 60 PhD students worldwide, and published over 160 papers in journals, conferences, and high-impact industry reports, including the large-scale industry survey, the CIC BIM Adoption Survey 2020, a best practice guidebook on digitalizing construction for enhancing project delivery and ESG 2024, for the Hong Kong Construction Industry. He also serves as a reviewer for the EPSRC, the NSFC, and over 30 SCI journals in the field, including Automation in Construction, Construction Management and Economics, and the ASCE Journal of Construction Engineering and Management.
